Just a thought:

Would a pedant, stuck alone on a desert island, still write SOS?

Because SMS doesn’t look the same upside-down.

    You have failed to enter the mindset of the pedant.
    As soon as the message is read, the pedant is no longer alone.

    One question remains.
    From what must we save the potential rescuer’s soul?
